New Heaven and New Earth 2/12/17

New Heaven and New Earth

Revelation 21:1-8

I.  Intro

Popular Mechanics recently had a list of the 25 largest projects going on in the world right now. One of the largest is the Three Gorges Dam in China. Standing on the Yangtze River it will take 17 years to build. Cost 59 Billion dollars and measure 595 feet  tall, 131 feet wide, be more than 7600 feet long  with 32 turbines producing electricity. Can you imagine how big of a job it must be to manage that project?

A man piloting a hot-air balloon discovers he has wandered far off course and is hopelessly lost. He  descends to a lower altitude and locates a   man down on the ground. He lowers the balloon to within hearing distance and shouts, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?" The man below   says: "Yes,  you're in a hot-air balloon, about thirty feet above this field."

"You must work in information   technology," says the balloonist. "Yes, I  do," replies the man. "And how did you know that?" "Well," says   the balloonist, "what you told me is technically correct, but of no use to anyone."

The man below says,  "You must work in management." "I do," replies the balloonist, "how did you know?" "Well," says the  man, "you don't know  where you are, or where you're going, but you expect my immediate help. You're  in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my  fault!"

  • Think about how big of a job it must be to manage eternity. The all-powerful creator of the universe manages the cosmos effortlessly. Think about it, there is not one maverick molecule in the entire universe.
  •  Eternity is a word that none of us can really grasp.
  • Yet our God manages all of it, including eternity.

Rev 21:1-8 ‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place[a] of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,[b] and God himself will be with them as their God.[c] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

II. What Happens to this one?

  • Before God creates the new heaven and new earth He’s going to have to do something about the one that we see around us every day.
  • The Bible teaches that the old heaven and earth will disappear.
  • Isaiah 51:6 ... Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garmet and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.
  • 2 Peter 3:10 ‘But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.
  • Revelation 21:1 ‘Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.’
  1. Think about what the Bible teaches here. As the people wait at the Great White Throne of Judgment they will see as the entire universe goes up in smoke.
  2. It will all ‘flee away’ or ‘disappear.’
  3. God will display His awesome power and by His Words will break up every atom in the universe.
  4. This is going to pave the way for the new heaven and the new earth.

III.Creation Anew

 Humpty Dumpty by Mother Goose
‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the king's horses and all the king's men, Couldn't put Humpty together again.’
  • The word for new used in vs 1 means not something that’s just new in time, but something that is new in quality.
  • It means something that is superior and different than the old.
  • We have a lot of beauty in our world.
  • But this is going to be even better!

I Can Only Imagine sung by Mercy Me

I can only imagine what it will be like, When I walk, by your side

I can only imagine what my eyes will see, When you face is before me

I can only imagine, I can only imagine

Surrounded by You glory, What will my heart feel

Will I dance for you Jesus, Or in awe of You be still

Will I stand in your presence, Or to my knees will I fall

Will I sing hallelujah, Will I be able to speak at all

I can only imagine, I can only imagine...

I can only imagine when that day comes, When I find myself standing in the Son

I can only imagine when all I would do is forever, Forever worship You

I can only imagine, ...I can only imagine

Surrounded by Your glory, What will my heart feel

Will I dance for You, Jesus, Or in awe of you be still

Will I stand in your presence, Or to my knees will I fall

Will I sing hallelujah, Will I be able to speak at all

I can only imagine, I can only imagine...

IV. The Conditions of the New Heaven and New Earth

Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, "Do you want to go to  heaven?"
The man said, "I do Father."
The priest said, "Then stand over there against the wall."
Then the priest asked the second man, "Do you want to got to heaven?"
"Certainly, Father," was the man's reply.
"Then stand over there against the wall," said the priest.
Then Father Murphy walked up to O'Toole and said, "Do you want to go to heaven?"
        O'Toole said, "No, I don't Father."
The priest said, "I don't believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don't want to go to   heaven?"
O'Toole said, "Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now."

  • Contrary to this man, Heaven is going to be a great place to be.
  • Three things that we know will be there: a new Jerusalem, God Himself living among us, righteousness.
  • Things that will not be there:
  1. No more sea. No chaos and disorder
  2. No more tears
  3. No more death
  4. No more mourning
  5. No more crying
  6. No more pain
  7. No more thirst- every desire will be satisfied
  8. No more wickedness
  9. No more Temple- because God will be everywhere
  10. No more night- the glory of God will shine
  11. No more closed gates- God’s door is always open
  12. No more curse- Christ’s death has lifted it.

Steven Lawson has described Heaven this way in a list of ‘no mores:

‘There will be no funeral homes, no hospitals, no abortion clinics, no divorce courts, no brothels, no bankruptcy courts, no psychiatric wards, and no treatment centers. There will be no more pornography, no teen suicide, no AIDS, no cancer, no talk shows, no rape, no missing children…no drug problems, no drive-by shootings, no racial tension and no prejudice.

There will be no misunderstandings, no injustice, no depression, no hurtful words, no gossip, no hurt feelings, no worry, no emptiness, and no child abuse. There will be no wars, no financial worries, no emotional heartaches, no physical pain, no spiritual flatness, no relational divisions, no murders and no casseroles.

There will be no tears, no suffering, no separations, no starvation, no arguments, no accidents, no emergency departments, no doctors, no nurses, no heart monitors, no rust, no perplexing questions, no false teachers, no financial shortages, no hurricanes, no bad habits, no decay and no locks. We will never need to confess sin, never need to apologize. Never need to straighten out a bad relationship. Never have to resist Satan again. Never have to resist temptation. Never.

  • It is this that completes the redemptive work of God in the world.
  • Genesis:                                                            Revelation:
  • Heavens and earth created                          new heaven and earth
  • Sun created                                                      no sun
  • Night established                                            no night
  • Seas created                                                    no seas
  • Rivers in the Garden of Eden                        River in the New Jerusalem
  • Curse announced                                            No curse
  • Death enters                                                    Death exits
  • Man denied access to tree of life               Access restored to the tree of life
  • Sorrow and pain begin                                  Sorrow and Pain End

          V  The Capital of Heaven

One lovely moonlit night a grandfather and his small granddaughter went for a walk. The stars were magnificent. As the grandfather named individual stars and constellations, the granddaughter exclaimed, “Grandpa, if the bottom side of Heaven is this beautiful, just think how wonderful the top side must be.”

John looks up and the spotlight is on this city that is coming down towards him.

The new Jerusalem.

It’s 1500 miles long, wide, and deep. It contains 3.375 billion cubic feet of space.

The footprint of the city would be drawing a map from Miami up to Maine, then west to Minneapolis, then south to Houston, then back to Miami.

This city rises 1500 miles.

It’s God’s hometown.

This city will be the metropolis of eternity. The city has huge foundation stones for it to rest on the new earth.

The main attraction in this city? The glory of God.

It’s described in terms of light, precious stones and gold polished to brilliance.

The skyline dazzles as the light of God shines on the beauty of the city.

It’s a 1500 mile cube.

In the original temple the Holy of Holies was measured at 15 ft on every side up and down.

Now it is a perfect cube, fit for the King!

What else is amazing about this city?

The wall surrounding it is 216 feet thick and 1500 miles high, made of jasper. That could be like a diamond or a wall that looks like shimmering ice.

It has 12 gates, one for each of the tribes of Israel. Each gate is made from a single pearl. They  are open all of the time providing unlimited access.

There are 12 foundation stones with the names of the 12 apostles on them. The colors will be diamond, deep blue, green, red, gold, violet and purple.

The names of the tribes on the gates and the apostles on the foundation symbolizes that this city is for all of God’s people.

There’ll be a street of gold. Everyone lives on main street.

In the center there will be a River than runs down main street all the way to the throne of God.

It’ll be home.

  • DL Moody once said “It is not the jeweled walls or pearly gates that are going to make heaven attractive. It is being with God.”

           VI.  Who are the Citizens?

  • Hebrews 12:22-24 describes the residents of Gods new world.
  • But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly[a] of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
  • There are 3 identifiable groups here besides God Himself.
  • There are the angels, church-age believers, and the rest of the people of God from other ages.
  • “the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven who have now been made perfect.”
  • During an edition of the news program 60 Minutes, Dan Rather interviewed Jack Welch, the outspoken former CEO of General Electric. At the end of the interview, Rather asked Welch, “What’s the toughest question you have ever been asked?” Welch replied, “Do you think you’ll go to Heaven?”

  • All those who have trusted in Him will be in heaven.
  • We’ll get there by God’s Amazing Grace
  • Rev 21:8 describes eight kinds of people who won’t be there.
  • “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
  • These aren’t referring to isolated acts of sin. This list describes a pattern and direction of life.
  1. Cowards- those who are ashamed of Christ
  2. The Corrupt- those who live polluted lives
  3. Murderers- those who hate their fellow man
  4. The Immoral- those who live a lifestyle of sexual immorality
  5. Those who practice witchcraft- those who delve into the occult
  6. Idol Worshippers- those who submit to a created thing in order to receive what only God can give
  7. Liars- those who habitually deceive others
  8. Unbelievers- those who neglect or reject Christ

VII. Conclusion

I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright!

There is perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light.

All pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed;

I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade?

Oh! But Jesus’ love illumined Every dark and fearful glade.
